Summertime is almost over, and since it is already June, it is about time to get ready for the rainy days. In the Philippines, we only have summer and the rainy season. It is finally time to feel a little chill in the air after the extreme heat that summer has brought.
However, the kind of rain that we experience here is sometimes a little too much. In fact, we don’t just experience rain because the Philippines is one of the locations that has been a target of the major and the strongest typhoons.
The sad news is that these typhoons have been detrimental not only to properties, crops, animals and livelihood, but it has also caused death to hundreds and thousands of people.
So how do we really prepare for the rainy season?
1. Make sure that your roofs are ready for the heavy rains. Regularly checking and inspecting your roofs will spare you from future unnecessary expenses, and by regular it means doing it at least twice a year. Inspect your roofs if there are cracks and holes, and also see if there are any weak spots that will possibly allow moisture leaks inside your home.
2. Get an emergency/survival kit ready. We all know that when typhoons hit us, they hit us hard and we cannot just be complacent about it. Lives have been lost due to strong typhoons and we can’t let that happen to any of our families. It is why it is very important to be ready with the emergency kit in cases of emergency. It should include flashlight, extra batteries, enough supply of water, extra clothes and beddings, utensils, canned goods, medicines, candles and matchsticks and transmitter radio.

3. Always be in the know when it comes to weather updates and reports. There is no better way to be prepared than by being up to date. Always watch weather reports especially when a storm or typhoon is anticipated.
4. Get the entire household instructed about the things they should do shall a typhoon hits. It is important that everyone in the house is aware of the things that they must do when there is a storm, and when it starts to flood. Knowing the things to do will reduce panic and will help keep things under control.
